Wedding Season

The season of weddings is coming soon. I have 3-5 weddings to go to this summer/fall, and I've been contemplating using the gorgeous purewool pictured to knit me a shawl.

But as one with limited lace experience and no shawl experience...what to knit?
Originally in browsing ravelry patterns, I was looking at Eunny Jang's Print O' The Wave....and then I looked at the pattern. I don't think I'm quite there yet.

I've also been looking at Kiri, but again, am I ready for that? Also, the yarn for kiri is much more fluffy than my merino 1 ply.
And I've been looking at Juno, which would be the first "piquant" Knitty pattern I'll have ever attempted. It appears with my taste in shawls, I will have to be a fearless knitter, no matter what I choose.

The problem is, that I love, love, love intricate lace, especially leafy looking lace. I have no interest in a triangular or rectangular block of knitting with intermittent holes. I want the holes to look like something, preferably pretty. I want a shawl that you can't buy at a store....but one that I will be able to finish with my turtle-like knitting speed in time for the fall weddings, when I will want to cover up.

What do you think? Am I going in over my head?

Any suggestions for beginner/intermediate shawls that fulfill my 101 requirements? :)

I have this exact same dilemma. I want to make a shawl for a gift for someone and then I remembered that I began two shawls and frogged both of them. I am attracted to the very large intricate lace shawls.

I am making one of the beginner lace shawls from Victorian Lace Today. It is really lacy and looks like little diamonds with a border around the edge. I don't know if this will help or not. I hope that if I can do several of the smaller projects then I will be able to accomplish something more complicated later. Good luck.

That's a really gorgeous colorway - I can see it going with so much you'd wear to weddings!

I don't have any lace experience myself but if you think it's pretty, I have heard from several friends that the forest canopy shawl is a good place to start!

I think either the Kiri or the Juno would be perfectly fine for a beginner. I don't think they are too complicated. I think you should try one!

I just started my first shawl yesterday (using Malabrigo lace). I don't know if this one might be too triangular for your liking, but it's the Adamas Shawl. http://mimknits.com/shop/index.php?main_page=document_product_info&cPath=65&products_id=199
It was marked as pretty easy on ravelry.
